VOLUNTEER WITH US!

We currently need help on the Big Wave Farm…

Do you love animals?

Do you work well independently?

Are you responsible?

Do you want to give back to your community?

Do you live between Half Moon Bay and Montara?

If you said YES to many of those questions, Big Wave Farm might be right for you.  Big Wave Farm located in the Princeton Harbor is looking for volunteers to join their Chicken Feeding Crew. As a member of this dedicated team you’d be trained and then assigned one morning a week to feed and check on the chickens at Big Wave Farm.

Chicken volunteer duties include:

  • Filling the two feed silos
  • Cleaning waterers and making sure animals have fresh water
  • Doing a visual check of the flock to assess their overall health.  (If there are any issues, you contact the Farm manager.)
  • Scooping poop and composting in designated area
  • Collecting eggs from the nesting boxes
  • Recording everything in the daily log
  • Ensuring that the yard is locked up and secured before leaving
  • Closing the Farm gate and locking it upon exit
  • We like people to get there by 10 AM at the latest.
  • Basic knowledge of chickens is a plus.

FAQ

What if I can’t make it?

The volunteers are on a group text and you simply secure someone to cover your shift.

Are Roosters Aggressive?

Some people worry that roosters can be aggressive, but that’s not always the case. Our rooster, Zorro, is actually a very gentle and sweet guy. He’s never caused any problems with our volunteers. He is pretty big, so it’s understandable that people might feel a little nervous when they first see him and step back. But once you get to know him, you’ll find that Zorro is much more interested in snacks than anything else!

What if a chicken is sick?

We do most of our veterinary care for things that aren’t too major, but we wouldn’t expect the volunteers to need to do any of that. We would need them to be able to look at a chicken and see if there might be signs of illness and let us know.

Are there any other opportunities to get involved?

Absolutely!  The Big Wave Center is scheduled to open this spring and we will have many roles for volunteers.  We will update our website as we announce more details!

Other questions?

Put them on the interest form and someone will get back to you.
