Dear Families and Friends of Big Wave,
Although 2020 was a difficult year for most of us, it was also a year of huge landmarks for Big Wave. This December 2020 marked the 21st birthday of Big Wave and the completion of the first phase of construction, a 1.5 mile underground water main.
During these long years we went through five designs and 34 public hearings to finally reach our present project. We submitted our first proposal in 2004, 11 single story cottages on the southern parcel (now the farm) and a community building. After three more designs and eight years the County approved Big Wave in 2012. Opponents appealed this approved project to the California Coastal Commission (CCC). The CCC upheld the appeal in 2014. Our project appeared doomed. Fortunately, Big Wave LLC which had donated the 5-acre southern parcel to the non-profit Big Wave Group (BWG), agreed to donate additional land on the northern parcel to BWG to keep our project alive. The rest is history. Six years later we broke ground.
Through all these years our Mission has never changed, to provide affordable housing, employment and careers, and community for adults with developmental disabilities that will forever be financially supported through a model that provides recurring, inflation adjusted revenue in perpetuity through private businesses.
Our support community has grown. We now have a community housing cooperative of families who have provided funds and endless volunteer hours to make Big Wave successful. Our donor and grants base have increased. We have attracted businesses who will be located at Big Wave to provide revenue and jobs to help sustain our Mission. Weekly we receive inquiries from people wanting to donate time to make Big Wave successful.
Big Wave has been and will continue to be successful because of the relentless generosity and love of so many people and businesses. We are so thankful to be finally entering the construction phase of Big Wave. 2021 will be a good year.
All my best,
CEO – Big Wave
