Pumpkin Carving Contest

There were many smiles and laughter during our first annual Pumpkin Carving Contest! Participants were judged on their creativity, craftsmanship and work space neatness. Patrick and Evan won first place, sharing the $20 cash prize.

Lizzie was recognized for having the scariest pumpkin, Joey the most traditional, Veronica the most whimsical, Evan the most sentimental and Matt the most detailed.

Thank you to everyone who participated, carvers and spectators! Also thank you to the Farm Committee for hosting and buying the supplies.

San Mateo County Planning Commission Hearing Results

Dear friends, supporters and community members,

Last Wednesday, January 14, 2015, the Big Wave Project had a public hearing with the San Mateo County Planning Commission about our request for permits for the North Project Alternative Plan.

The NPA Plan puts all buildings on the larger Northern parcel leaving the Southern parcel for wetland restoration, public parking for coastal access and a boat storage lot.  The Northern parcel would hold the Wellness Center, independent dwellings for adults with disabilities and office space for businesses.  (If you would like to learn more about the NPA, click here. )

After a five hour session of staff reports and public input, the commissioners approved the project’s request for permits, 4 to 1.  (If you would like to read the handouts that were distributed during the hearing, please click here to access the PDF files. ) We still need to wait the allowed 10 days for appeals before we are given our permits.

Big Wave has been fighting to become a reality for 12 years. Big Wave supporters have attended 27 hearings to help the project pass. We are almost there!  Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and motivational chants to help us get to where we want to be!  Your support helped make this project a reality.

Thank you!!

The Big Wave Team

New Year Chickens

Dear friends,

This new year has blessed us with 20 new chickens for the Big Wave Farm!  Two farm volunteers, Kathy and Catherine, went on a mission to find more chickens for the farm. Keeping in mind the long term goal of creating an education garden space and the ability to be a sustainable farm-to-table farm for the Big Wave community, we are trying to expand all parts of the farm.

Kathy and Catherine made the short trip to Menlo Park to rescue 10 hens and on a different day, adventured down to South San Jose to get 10 more chickens from a residence.

Except for one bird whom we decided to name Trouble, merging the three flocks went really well. With minor amounts of sparring, the peeking order was established quickly and without the loss of feathers.

Here are some of our new hens:

Another Day on the Farm

Hello farmers!

The rain has been doing some good on the farm; our vegetables are growing.  Some are ready to be picked, others are  almost ready.

 100_1976

This is the last of the cabbage.  However, don’t worry, more cabbage will grow if you weren’t able to get some in the first round.

100_1978

Trisha is showing me the flower on a broccoli plant.  The broccoli will be picked when the flower head is large and tight, like what you would see at the grocery store.

 100_1980

The cauliflower, more developed than the broccoli, is ready to be picked.
